Activity Corner

There will probably be some Halloween stuff mixed in here today. Just sayin'.

Friday Game

Here's a fun little Halloween physics game. Try to save the good pumpkins by removing the rotten ones in Pumpkin Remover.

Good luck with the last level.

Net Neutrality Simplified

I use the internet a lot, and I pay for it too. But what everyone pays could change drastically if the Big Cable companies (Comcast, Time Warner) get their way. Here's a simple illustration of what could happen if they pass McCain's bill to block the FCC's net neutrality rules:

What the cable companies could do
(click to biggify. Source: reddit.)

Do we really want internet access to be =more= confusing than cable TV packages already are?

For more info, including how to make your opinion heard, see The Consumerist.

Old Timer

Old growth Douglas fir
Wow, that is one tall-ass old-growth tree. You don't often see these monsters in built-up areas around Seattle.

Automatic Advertising

At first, the idea of a computerized "ad generator" sounds strange. All this site does is match up Flickr pictures and supposedly random "slogans". But, being exposed to advertising everywhere, you quickly become mesmerized by the apparent appropriateness of the slogans to the pictures.

I went expecting to just look, and ended up staying for quite a while. In fact, I left the window open and just switched back to it from time to time for a little hit. The fact that the ads go by a bit too quickly adds to the appeal. After you watch it for a while, you'll see some of the same words being reused, but it's still pretty interesting.

See the ad generator for yourself.

Hand-Made Regrets

If you're not familiar with Etsy, it's a site where people who "craft" can showcase and sell their works. But, as in any endeavor, some (both people and crafts) are more talented than others.

And, of course, the internet is there to make fun of those who may not measure up. Welcome to the world of Regretsy.

Friday Game

This game is a fun variation of the "cutting" puzzle physics games. You have 30 cuts per level to free or otherwise move the Vikings from the ice onto their ship. How far can you go with Ice Breaker?

(I especially like how the little Viking commander bashes any ice that lands on his ship.)

Where'd You Get That?

The problem with a food court layout is that it's pretty disconcerting to be eating in an Indian restaurant and see a couple people at the next table eating pizza.

Quack Quack

Maybe you've seen it displayed in hundreds of Facebook photos. But if you haven't, know that the expression of pursed lips, called a "duckface", is a new fad among models and regular people alike.

But why? It looks ridiculous.

Taking up the cause to stamp out this annoying look is the whole point behind Stop Making That Duckface!

Dick's Drive-In

Dick's Drive-In
Dick's on 45th near the University of Washington is a Seattle institution for the classic burgers, fries, and shakes. But you'll rarely see it like this: closed, without the throng of cars and people normally filling the parking lot.

My favorite Dick's story: Several years ago when I was a limo driver, I had a group of prom kids that came here for their prom dinner. What a sight, boys in their tuxes and girls in their fancy dresses, all huddled around the back of the limo, eating burgers and fries off the trunk. It doesn't get any classier (or classicier) than that.

How Unique Are You?

As people, we are all individuals, but sometimes (whether we know it or not) we share our name with someone else. Of course, take the internet and stir in some census data, and it's easy to find out how many other people have the same name as you (or someone else you know). See for yourself at How Many Of Me.

I was =not= surprised that I'm the only "Nuclear Toast", but I =was= surprised at how many people have the first name of "Nuclear": 1,538. I know, right?!

This model on the snack machine is just way too casually excited about that potato chip.

I'd love to see how this gig is listed on his resume.

I Know What I Like

So you already know what music or movies you like. The question is, how do you find similar media that you may not know about?

Liveplasma is a cool relationship-mapping site that lets you search for a movie (say, The Princess Bride) and see a visual representation of related movies. You can also search by actor, director, or musical artist.

Tips: Make sure you click on the right button. And you can't drag the map around; click where you want to center the map.

You might see a lot of things you already know and like, but you might find an undiscovered nugget. That's what the site is all about.

There IS Such a Thing as a Stupid Question

Yahoo Answers is sort of a community effort where people with questions meet people with answers. And, of course, a site exists to mock the question-asking ability of idiots with computers. Check out the hilarity at Bad Questions for Yahoo Answers.

Gauche and Gaudy Gothic

American Gothic is an iconic early 20th-century painting. It is also one of the most copied images, as documented on American Gothic Parodies.

It's an interesting look into both how the image is used and someone's interest in collecting them.

There's really not much you can add to this site's tagline:

"A ridiculous compendium of weird, bizarre, and off-beat books."

Friday Game

Much like my beloved Gridgame, boxSpin is about rotating "tiles". Although in this incarnation, the goal is to start chain reactions that change all the spinners to the same color. See if you can save the world with boxSpin.

Tip: Sometimes the reactions wrap around from the edges to the opposite edge.

My best so far is 7 turns!

Habañero Ketchup

Habanero ketchup
Raggs returned from a business trip with a surprise for me: a bottle of habañero ketchup. That girl is awesome. So, that same night, I fired up a batch of tater tots and tried it out. It's a sweet ketchup with a good burn that continues to build as you eat more.

The next night I made french fries. Yeah, good stuff.
