Vicarious Living Through Texts
I'm not sure what kind of friends and lifestyles these people have, or even if they are true, but Texts From Last Night are so awesome that I can't stop reading them.
Sample: "In line at the arbys drive thru on foot. Legendary."

A Deal Addiction
If you do anything outdoors-related, and like to get deals on gear, then you'll love Steep and Cheap. It's like a cross between woot.com and eBay.
It's also addicting because of the geeky up-to-the-minute statistics.

Enunciation Is Important
When you're talking to someone about fennel and trying to describe its anise-like taste, you have to pronounce it very distinctly when you say it's "anise-y".
No, it doesn't taste like butt.

Earth Day

Yep, it's Earth Day. It's hard for us geeks, tethered to electricty the way we are, to be green. So feel free to hit the intartubes and get your green on.
(Fun fact: doing a Google search for "earth day" brings up a link to the movie, starring Keanu Reeves, The Day the Earth Stood Still.)

Inadvertent Experimentation
The salad bar in the cafeteria recently added a new topping: chopped asparagus. Since I subscribe to the "Crazy Ash Nachos" technique of piling my salad with pretty much every topping, I started added the asparagus bits.
Does everybody know about asparagus pee? Amount of asparagus from the salad bar to have an impact: approximately one stalk.
Science class is now over.

I Can See My Migratory Route From Here
I'm walking through the office park on my way to work this morning, and hear an unmistakable honk. Following the sound, I'm surprised to see:
I have never seen a Canadian goose on top of a building before. I didn't even know they do that.
Apparently even geese like to take a gander every once in a while.

Recipes for Disaster
In today's Costco-tray-of-veggies-and-wraps kind of world, we forget that our parents and grandparents actually prepared food, especially when they entertained guests (while wearing dresses with pearls or suits and ties). Harken back to the fabulous 50s and sexy 60s with these recipes, plucked out of cookbooks from thrift store buying sprees. Here's an example quote from one:
"Almost anything you like can be rolled in bacon, oven or pan-broiled, and served on picks."
Yeah, now you're talking!
You'll be horrified and mesmerized by Mock Duck.

MacGuyver Mapmaking
Raggs and I spent the weekend at her parents' house. Hanging out in the kitchen, I noticed something on the side of the fridge.
It's a map, drawn on a portion of paper towel. I don't even know the story behind it, but the random, creative immediacy of it just cracked me up. (And, yes, the knife is stuck to two more of those ring magnets.)

Just "State"
I learned from my friend Shanarama (seen here celebrating the NCAA champions) that Michigan State is known just as "State". Is that just an in-Michigan thing, or do people who follow sports generally know this?
I'm neither a Michiganianer nor a sports follower, so I just don't know. And I wouldn't really care, except Shan's all "State this!" and "State that!" and "WOOOOO!". Or something.

Momma Always Said...
...don't talk to strangers. Right? And yet, if you've spent any time in chat rooms on the intartubes, you've done exactly that. In fact, a couple of my really close friends started out as chat room strangers.
A "room" full of cyberstrangers is one thing, but how about just one? A high school student in Vermont has created a website where you can talk to an arbitrary, anonymous interweb stranger from the comfort of your own computer. After trying it for a bit, I can say it's definitely an interesting experience. (And if you type in complete sentences, the feelings of superiority can be exhilarating.)
Chat with strangers at Omegle.

Tulip Pedals
Raggs and I participated in the Tulip Pedal this weekend, an organized bike ride through the tulip fields in the Skagit Valley. It's one of "our" events we do every year.
Of course, with the weather/winter we've had, there were no tulips. Not one. There were some daffodils, though.
We saw a lot of birds, including a bald eagle sitting in a tree by the road.
The weather was gorgeous, even if the tulips weren't.
Next bike outing: the Daffodil Classic in Orting.

Disabled Viewpoint
Little is known of "manoncrutches" except that he has crutches and rides the subway. And takes pictures of the abled people who are sitting in the "reserved for people with disabilities" seats that he clearly needs to use.
I find it interesting that he was angry enough to purchase the domain name and start the blog. But the funny captions and passive-aggressive feel are what makes People Who Sit In The Disability Seats When I'm Standing On My Crutches so much fun.

Flamey

I bought this shirt from woot.com because it's called "Shiny" and is a tribute to one of my favorite shows, Firefly. It arrived this week.
I got dressed quickly this morning, and was like, "Hey, I'll wear my new shirt today." It wasn't until I got to work and saw myself in the bathroom mirror that I realized the problem with this shirt. It totally looks like my junk is on fire.

Flabbergasted
From an email I received. Apparently, the original author is a bit upset about the cost of the International Space Station. But his anger led to one of the most magnificently mangled sentences I've seen outside of The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest:
"Can anyone recall offhand something scientific this incredibly costly collection of hardware has accomplished in addition to wasting more billions than the government will ever admit?"
You go, angry ISS guy!

Tea Baggin'

Apparently, based on the trash can in the kitchen at work, it's tea time. And tea bag containers aren't heavy enough to trip the swinging doors of the lid.
Also, how hard do you have to throw away something to crack those swinging doors?

Peep Demise
Marshmallow peeps are a staple of Easter time, and everyone weighs in on their love or hate of the little sugar-coated guys. Some like 'em fresh, some like 'em stale, and others just hate 'em.
And some want to kill them, which is the point behind 100 Ways to Kill a Peep.
