Ohio is a Piano

Geeks come in all sorts of varieties. Today's exhibit is a map geek that realized Ohio has 88 counties, the same number of keys on a piano. Rank the counties in all sorts of ways to "play" the state when Ohio is a piano.

(Clicking the map opens the interactive Flash application in another window.)

Singing Celebrities

Celebrities aren't always the best singers, but that doesn't stop them from trying. Not that they're all bad, but do we need to see or hear them? The website Karoake Lounge brings us a collection of videos of stars doing their musical best with Failed/Cringeworthy Celebrity Music Crossovers.

No Activity Corner?

I'm on vacation this week, so you know what that means: no activity corner. Sorry to disappoint, but you can expect quality interweb distractions to be back next week.

(Now you know why the posts have been so lame this week.)

On the plus(?) side, I've actually seen this "daylight" I've heard people talk about!

Friday Game

The game is seeing how easy it is to construct an interesting tune just by clicking squares in the different instruments of inudge.

Definitely Packin'

I don't know what he's packing, and I was trying not to be too obvious taking the picture. You can barely see the huge container(?) on his right hip as well. I'm guessing it's camera gear.

And no, he didn't sit down on the bus, even though there were empty seats, opting to stand rather than unhitch his nerd holsters.

Sharing and the Internet

With all the social media sites and methods for sharing information, it's not hard to know what's going on in people's lives. But sometimes folks get so caught up with sharing updates of daily minutia that they forget the wider audience. And, and always, there's a site that will skim the cream and present for you in a single package. So follow along as people sometimes reveal too much at Oversharers.

Dental Hijinks

Dental implements
I had to hold the cellphone over my head, facing the other way, but got this lucky shot of all the tools my hygienist used on me. Yeah, that's my blood on the gauze.

Good times.

You Are Where You Shop

Apparently, anyway. Yes, Wal-Mart is famous for low prices, but it's also known (mostly by word of mouth and jokes) for low-class chic. But now you don't have to just take someone's word for it. There's a whole site dedicated to documenting the People of Wal-Mart. And you'll go through every horrifying page, because you just can't miss any. (And his comments just make many of the pictures.)

Concentrated Humor

Another Twitter consolidator is out there, collecting and displaying humorous tweets. While some may be R- or X-rated, they're still funny. Example:

"Babies are kinda like drunk people -- nothing they say is comprehensible, and you know they're not going to remember what you say later."

Check out the madness at Twaxed.

Friday Game

It's a very simple game, a side-scroller with only one control. No mouse, no arrow keys; just hit X or C to jump your avatar through the crumbling earthquake-prone world of Canabalt.

And keeping it fresh, as you die and have to try again, it's dynamically generated each time, so you don't memorize the layout. Awesome!

Got Dice?

A couple of additional pictures from PAX this past weekend. And yes, then I'll stop talking about it.

Tabletop gamers need dice, and there was a booth selling nothing but.

A shot of the bin of multi-sided dice.
Ooh, a d20!

Visualizing Data

When it comes to "seeing" the numbers, we're probably most familiar with pie charts. But there are so many more interesting ways to both portray and understand information. Take a guy who loves numbers and finding new ways to present them, and you have the captivatingly geeky site Information is Beautiful.

More PAX

Saw WFW and got his limited edition The Day After booklet (#77/200)! Is there anyone cooler? Mancrush.

Also seen:

  • Numerous Master Chiefs/Spartans.

  • Numerous costumed booth babes.

  • A large number of utilikilts.

  • The two best Ghostbusters costumes I've ever seen.

  • A few guys even whiter than me. I know!

Liveblogging from PAX. Aion. Star Trek MMO. Left 4 Dead 2. Beatles Rock Band. EVE Online. And, of course, City of Heroes and Champions. And those are just the games.

Lots of people in game- and scifi-related costumes. Look for me, I'm the guy in jeans and a black t-shirt.

Taping Yourself

It's funny how we use digital video cameras now and still call it "taping".

But this isn't about movies. It's about actual tape. And you.

It's pretty simple. Screw up your face with a whole lot of tape (Scotch tape, packing tape, sellotape, whatever), take a picture of the result, and send it in. Some of the results are pretty funny. Check them out, and get involved, at Tape Yourself.
