LiveJournal, Live

One of the first big social-networking-slash-blogging sites was LiveJournal. And today it is still home to a sizeable portion of webmanity.

Today's link is an interesting one that I ran across a few years ago, but it was eventually stymied as LiveJournal did their best to deny access to individual picture access. Apparently, the new freedoms on the web have brought it back.

What it does: Displays the last 30 images posted to LiveJournal users' pages. They can be animated GIFs, scans, pets, clothes, people at parties, whatever. Live and uncensored. And strangely addicting. Wait a few minutes and refresh.

WARNING: UNCENSORED. Often you'll see a picture of... well, porn. Just so you're warned in advance if your boss, or significant other, or both, walk in. It's the internet, you know.

If you dare, check out the LiveJournal picture feed.

December, Back in Aught Eight

Plowless in Seattle
The funny thing about the weather is it's so local and (generally) fleeting, so you normally can't talk about it with people who don't live in your area because, frankly, they don't care. Oh wait, maybe that's just me...

It was funny coming back to work this week after Snowpocalypse '08, because everyone was talking about it. Random discussions in the hall about how hard it was to get somewhere, accidents, tire chains, shoveling snow, being stuck somewhere, and having to dip into the Y2K supplies. You know, war stories.

But I'm grateful, for two reasons. First, some day I get to tell grandchildren-aged people about the big snowstorm of aught eight. And, because Seattle is a very hilly city, I get to grouse about how I walked through the snow. Uphill. Kids these days, I tell ya.

Build Your Own Supercomputer

Supercomputers have the computional strength and speed that their name implies, but they are also prohibitively expensive, which basically means that we can never have one of our own. That is, until two scientists from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth created a how-to guide on building your own supercomputer with multiple Playstation 3s.

No, seriously. An 8-PS3 cluster packs quite a processing punch. The biggest problem most home users would have is power, as each PS3 draws 200-300W. Another issue could be acquiring so many PS3s, although after-Christmas sales may help.

The guide is available online at

Still Snowing

Soft, what flakes through yonder window fall?
It's teh Crissmiss Evez and still the snow falls in Seattle, heralding an almost-unheard-of white Crissmiss. Uh, Mother Nature? You know I love you, but come on, cut it the hell out already.

Today is the extra-special, pre-Christmas, all-bacon edition of Nuclear Toast.

Make your own at Instructables and your stuff can be CHRISTMAS'D!

The Snow that Ate Seattle

This was my car on Saturday, after Friday night's snow, and before Saturday night's additional six inches.

Snowed-in Toastmobile
This will be one of the most memorable Christmases most folks around here will ever have, thanks to practically shutting down the entire northwest. Holiday parties, last minute shopping, even work: all scuttled by a record-breaking pileup of snow. And those of us who live here are bracing for more snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Holy hanging hayrides!
In a city woefully underprepared for such an onslaught (mainly since it rarely happens here), tempers and supplies are in short, um, supply. Many gas stations are closed. If this keeps up much longer, it might turn into the Buffalo, New York version of Mad Max.

Snow Day

When I rolled back the rock in front of my man-cave this morning, I was greeted with a type of precipitation not common in Seattle. And when it comes down this hard, the whole city basically shuts down.

Snow day!

So I'm hunkered down in the cyber corner of the cave, watching the less fortunate (or more stupid) commuters dealing with traffic snarl and accidents.

The ironic part is, no one will read this post today, because none of them are at work.

The Flying Snowman

If you live around here, you know it snowed this weekend, and that it's as cold as a freezer in a Canadian's garage in January. Raggs built me a little snowman on my car. His name is Clarence. He likes to go fast. He yells, "Wheeeeeeee!" as we zoom along the road.

He may get a friend, since it's supposed to snow again tomorrow.

Most people know about DNA from shows like CSI, but don't know what their own DNA looks like. So, of course, there's an internet solution to fill this void of information. And not only can your genetic code be depicted in many ways and sizes, it's actually pretty cool looking. It's DNA Art.

Dear Holiday Ninja

These signs are popping up all over my work as part of the Secret Holiday Ninja project. Some are straightforward, but this one in particular caught my eye.

Rhetorical list

Apparently, it's generic enough that passsersby (or the assigned ninja) needed to ask clarifying questions. In case you can read it, I've transcribed it below:

1. Touch up paint for a '94 corvette. ...What color??
2. Tail light for a '94 'vette.
3. new chair.
4. DVD ...any DVD? or will Office Space suffice?

Rock on, holiday ninjas!
