Hawaii Recap

When you go on vacation and do touristy things, you learn all sorts of trivia that you can use to bore your friends when you return. Such as, Hawaii is comprised of a total of 132 islands, and holds the only two royal palaces on American soil.

Oahu: nice. Went to the beach the first night, almost lost my flipflops.
Kauai: awesome. Almost shat a pineapple when we saw how many =big= fish were right offshore. Snorkeled.
The Big Island: double awesome. Saw a sea turtle up close, saw spinner dolphins, and lots of fish and coral. Snorkeled twice.
Maui: awesome. Snorkeled in Molokini crater. Hiked the rainforest, where we ate more weird fruits and plants in one day than I have in my whole life combined.
Most eaten item: pineapple. We could all practically shit one after a couple of days.
Most annoying: me, for constantly saying the Hawaiian name of the state reef triggerfish (humuhumunukunukuapua'a). Runner up: Josh, for seeing all the eels.
Most amusing: the Wal-Mart shuttle at every port. And the fact that it was well used.

With hundreds of pictures to download and sort, it'll be a few days before we have 'em organized to share. Got laundry to do!

Many Happy Returns

I'm back, and I know that I missed the internet way more than it missed me. But we had a great time, and I even got some weird brown skin color without bursting into flames. Whoa. Now I just need some time to catch up. More later.

What are you doing?

The window in my office has a spiderweb in one corner, on the outside. It's been really cool to observe the spider in residence, up close and personal.

Just now, a small bug got caught in the web. The spider zoomed out from her hiding spot to the center of the web, and plucked with her feet. I leaned in close to the window, watching while she used the vibrations to find the location of her now-prey, then deftly encased and retrieved her next meal, taking it back to her hiding place.

Then, I looked up to see my officemate staring at me with a quizzical "What the *bleep* are you doing?" look on his face.

"Spider caught a bug."

We both turn back to our computers. The spiderweb carries droplets from the now-steady rain. Tomorrow, I'll be in Hawaii. The clock, knowing it stands in my way, does its best to go slowly. The busy-ness of work is its foil. Ha, take that, clock!

Life Imitates Art

It's no surprise that many blogs and websites develop a core microcommunity that monitors and responds to content on a regular basis. What can be a surprise is how that e-content can sometimes spill over into the real world.

For example, xkcd is a web comic that doesn't win any drawing awards, but is loaded with teh funnay. First, he drew this comic. Then his readers started reproducing it.

My dream is that people will start reproducing the "Caption Contest" pictures I post every week. And then send them to me, wrapped in money.

What's shakin'?

Earthquake risk map
Everyone knows California is prone to earthquakes. But as this map shows, so are other locations in the US (details here). I wonder if there'll be an earthquake in Hawaii next week?

A Mind Consumed

Since we're leaving for Hawaii on Saturday, most every waking minute is taken up with thinking about the trip. Planning what to take. Thinking about seeing my family, snorkeling, waves and sand and sun. But above all else:

1. Raggs in a swimsuit.
2. No internet for 9 days.

I'm hoping #1 will take care of #2.

Edit: The rotating webcam thingy over there provided me with this gem.

Kwik-E Makeover

Speaking of The Simpsons, as a promotion for the upcoming movie, twelve 7-11 stores across the nation have been turned into Kwik-E Marts. Here are a few photos I snapped at the Seattle 4th and Denny location. (Note: I didn't take one of the guys behind the counter who, despite wearing Kwik-E Mart tunics, did =not= appear to be enjoying themselves. At all.)

Alas, they were out of Krusty Os. I also neglected the Squishie machine.

Fire and Ice

I don't know why, but it seems that the temperature in the office, every office, must always be set to "walk-in freezer". Coworkers, past and present, know that I wear my coat practically all the time in attempt to keep my core temperature at a comfortable level.

This week has been tough, for two reasons: I ride the bus, and the record-breaking Seattle heat wave. Do I dress light for comfort, for the bus stop waiting and bus riding, and then freeze all day in the office; or, do I dress warm for the office, and then suffer the killer heat during the commutes?

Attempting to find a happy medium...

Entertainment, or insult?

I continue to be entertained by the subject lines of spam messages I get. Two standouts from today's early crop of email:

  • blotched turkey
  • humorously superficial
I was amused until the thought hit me that they could actually be talking about me. I'd say, "Ouch," but... <points at wristband>

Wow... Just Wow

Overhead conversation: "I just talked to [name] and heard your story about getting out of jury duty because of WoW, and I must say I'm impressed."

WoW (World of Warcraft) is a massive multiplayer online game. How one can use that to get out of jury duty is both awe-inspiring and frightening.

Now what?

It's the day after The Holiday, and attendance is much lower than usual. So what do you do to keep yourself occupied?

1. Relive yesterday. Sun, BBQ, fireworks... and laughing that A. carried a towel to wipe the slobber off her balls. Explain THAT, A.!
2. Chat on instant messaging so it sounds like you're work-typing.
3. Surf the internet. Already read the best of craigslist? Then try perusing office confessions.

=THE= National BBQ Holiday

The Fourth of July is the ultimate day of BBQ Americana. Hot dogs and hamburgers and watermelon go hand in hand with parades and fireworks. It's almost like it's genetic.

What a bummer, then, if you're vegetarian. As you watch the carnivores circle the grill, salivating, you have no recourse but to retreat, forlornly, to the potato salad.

But...
Keep your fork, there's pie!

Not Solar Powered

It's a beautiful day outside; the sun is shining, the birds are singing, people are walking and enjoying the weather.

I can tell it's really sunny, because the brightness from the windows is causing a glare on my monitors.
