Dramatic Prairie Dog

The video I posted here has come to be known as The Dramatic Prairie Dog (in spite of initially being misidentified as a chipmunk) and has taken the internet by storm. You can even get a t-shirt.

And now, someone has created a website just for all the knockoff videos spawned by the original. It's called, predictably, (You can even see the Japanese show the original footage comes from.)

Loser Cruiser Abuser

The company where I work offers incentives for alternative transportation. So, with free pass in hand, I started riding the bus to work this week. There are a lot of personal and ecological motivations, but the big two are, 1) it takes about the same amount of time, car versus bus; and 2) I have a bad case of traffic Tourette's when I drive.

Quick recap of my accumulated total of three rides:
1. Tried to get on the wrong bus for the morning commute. Bus driver misses a stop, and later goes the wrong way down a one-way street.
2. Tried to get on the wrong bus again in the afternoon.
3. Kid with earphones sings along, extremely intermittently, and rushes to door at every stop to spit, due to the huge wad of dip deforming his bottom lip.

Although, I know it'll become second nature soon enough. That's when you experience the real joys, like being lulled to sleep by the gentle, rumbling ride and missing your stop.

Best Five-Second Video on the Internet

Pour Some Sugar On Me

The company where I work promotes healthy living. They actually just announced a new program where they'll deliver sandwiches and salads to you for lunch, so you don't have to eat processed snack machine microwave food. Also, I work with a lot of computer geeks. So it was all the funnier when I just overheard this conversation:

Worker1: I don't believe it. The kitchen has two kinds of low-calorie sugar substitute, but no actual sugar.
Worker2: I guess you could always buy a candy bar from the snack machine and stir it in your coffee.

Edit: Rod, this is just for you.

Star Geeks

Home theater systems are nothing new. But buying actual props from Star Trek shows and movies to recreate them in your home theater is. Check out the article, and click View Slideshow to see the pictures.

Ah, Robot Chicken. If you haven't seen this show, it's action figures plus stop-motion animation plus comedy genious. If you have seen it, you'll enjoy their Star Wars skit medley with lots of references fans will recognize.

Edit: I forgot to add the map of the Star Wars galaxy.

If It's Too Loud, You're Too Old!

I went to a concert this weekend. (If you know me, you know my obsession.) I have to say, you know you're getting old when the noise is too much. And I don't mean the music, I mean the constant screaming. The screaming is so loud, it almost obscures the concert.

At least, I think that's what the lady next to me was trying to tell me. I couldn't hear her very well over the sound of my screaming.

Update: Back to the 50s

It seems the 1957 Belvedere unearthed on Friday didn't weather the years too well. Apparently the concrete vault filled with water, causing the car to rust and all included items decompose. The separately-sealed time capsule, however, kept its contents in pristine shape. Here's the recap, with videos here.

Back to the 50s!

If you're not doing anything tomorrow night, you might want to tune in to KOTV. That's because they'll be streaming the opening of a time capsule. What's so special about this one? It's a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere. It should be interesting see what shape the car is in after fifty years underground.

In the movie Back to the Future, Doc gave Marty some amazing from-the-future Nike shoes that self-closed. There is an online movement to make those shoes become a reality. Join in at McFly 2015.

Brace Yourself

Awareness bracelets have become popular, especially among the young. While the yellow Live Strong ones seem to be most prevalent, there are a variety of colors and supported causes for the bracelets (much like those magnetic ribbons). But I wonder, when someone wears an awareness bracelet, is it an advertisement to others or a reminder to one's self about something?

You see, I have what I've described as "raging apathy". So when I wear this, it's more a warning sign than anything else.
Apathy bracelet(I love the neutral gray color; it matches my geekskin almost exactly.)

Raggs has come to the brink of physical violence just for the way I point at it when I don't care about something. Which is a lot.

Time for some more mindless Friday fun!

  • The top 5 Jedi college fight videos.

  • The Czech Skoda with wooden wheels. Yes, actual tree cross-sections!

  • Among other things, Jeff Victor draws a lot of "bubblehead" Star Wars characters on his blog.

  • Take the excellent German film The Downfall, add the recent controversy of Microsoft dropping the Xbox 360 banhammer on lots of folks, and you get the very funny Adolf Hitler: Gamer video. Warning: Lots of subtitled expletives.

  • Sure, it's a promotional game, but an amazingly-rendered computer board game. Get the Glass.

  • It's super geeky! A fan with LEDs on the blades allows you to make moving images. Watch the video on the product page.

  • In case you haven't seen it, Mr. Lee used a digital camera to see what his cat does all day. It's the cat cam.

  • Lego art.

  • Bored at work? Challenge your officemates to a game of wikigroaning.

London 2012 logo
The powers-that-be have unveiled the logo for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Despite a wonderful corpdesignspeak press release, the reaction has been lukewarm at best. At a cost of around $800,000 to design, some people think the money was wasted. Of course, the internet responds with witty satire (such as this, this, this and this).

I have to admit that I was so taken aback, it took me a day to even see what the logo symbolizes.

Update: The BBC unveils readers' favourite alternative logo.

Show Your Support

It started out innocently enough. Yellow magnetic ribbons for your car, showing your support for the troops in Iraq (whether you agreed with why they were there or not). Soon variations with American flag designs followed.

Then, in the inevitable perversion of the original idea, they began to sprout different colors and slogans for a rainbow of causes. I knew it had gone overboard when I spotted one yesterday that was a weird color I couldn't associate to any known cause. I got closer to read the text: "Support organ donors".

Luckily, the internet is always there to skewer popular culture and fads. You can get a magnetic ribbon to support the guy that makes them, or to support the ribbons themselves.

I should make a "Support Nuclear Toast" magnetic ribbon. The only question is what color to use: black, brown, or glow-in-the-dark green?
